How leaders use hard and soft management tools effectively

Absolute order means death. Life and development thrive on chaos.

As a former CEO, I know you desperately want to ensure everything in your business is organized, put in place, and ticks perfectly.

But I also know you realize that more order leads to more bureaucracy and less creativity.

What can you do?

[1] Visualize your business as a set of processes (Value Waves). They create value for all key stakeholders.

[2] Craft a strategy.

The strategy will enable you to divide your processes into two groups:

  • those that won’t change soon (or will evolve incrementally)
  • those that need to change quickly

For the first group, use hard management tools: standards, SOPs, rules, and KPIs.

For the second, rely on soft tools: principles.
